More business owners are asking some version of the same question: can I just build my website with Claude? The honest answer is yes, more than you’d probably expect. But “a site that works” and “a site that actually converts and stays secure for years” turn out to be two different bars, and the gap between them is where this gets interesting.
What “building a website with Claude” actually means right now
Claude Code is Anthropic’s agentic coding tool, and it’s built specifically to let you describe what you want in plain language rather than write code yourself. You tell it what a page should do, it writes the actual code, and you can watch a live preview update as it works. It runs from a terminal, a desktop app, or directly in the browser connected to GitHub, so you’re not required to have a full development environment set up before you start.
The simplest starting point
If you just want to prototype an idea, Claude’s Artifacts feature inside a normal chat conversation lets you describe a page and see a working version appear instantly, no installation, no setup. It’s a genuinely useful way to test a concept or mock up a layout before committing to anything bigger.
The real builder: Claude Code
For an actual working website, Claude Code is the more capable option. You describe what you want in conversation, review the live preview as changes happen, and keep iterating by just explaining what to change next. It connects to your project’s actual files and git history, so changes are tracked properly rather than existing only inside a chat window.
What this is genuinely good for
A simple landing page. A prototype to pressure-test an idea before investing real budget. Fast iteration on design direction, describing a change and seeing it rendered in seconds rather than waiting on a design revision cycle. For a lot of early-stage thinking, this is a legitimately faster way to get from idea to something you can actually look at.
Where it gets harder on your own
This is the part that doesn’t show up until you’re further in. Hosting, domain setup, and DNS configuration. Ongoing security patching as dependencies age. Payment integrations, booking systems, CRM connections, the kind of complexity that goes well past a single page. Accessibility and polish across every device your customers actually use. And SEO structure done properly, not just a page that loads, but one built to be found. “It works when I preview it” and “it’s live, fast, and secure for paying customers” are genuinely different projects.
The honest middle ground
A lot of businesses are now using exactly this approach to prototype and settle on direction quickly, then bringing in a professional build to take that direction to production properly. That’s not a knock on the tool, it’s just where the handoff naturally sits. We’ve built this same shift into how we work with clients: come in with a rough idea or even a Claude-built prototype, and we’ll take it the rest of the way.
Where DDS fits in
If you’ve already started something with Claude, or you’re weighing up whether to, our services page covers how we take a project from early idea to a properly built, secure, production-ready site.
The bottom line
Claude genuinely changes how far you can get on your own, further than most business owners assume. It doesn’t remove the value of a professional build, it just moves where that value shows up, from writing the first version to making sure the final one actually holds up.
